Celebrating a Historic AFL Milestone: Jayden Nguyen’s Debut

The Australia Vietnam Friendship Society warmly congratulates Jayden Nguyen on his historic debut for the Essendon Bombers, becoming the first AFL men’s player of Vietnamese descent.

At just 19 years old, Jayden not only held his own against Sydney star Tom Papley, but also made history — representing a proud moment for the Vietnamese community in Australia and a milestone for multiculturalism in sport.

Jayden’s parents arrived in Australia in the 1980s, and his success is a story of determination, hard work, and community support. After the match, Jayden expressed his gratitude:

“I’m pretty rapt with the support I’ve got over the past few days from the Vietnamese community, and the Asian community in general. I just feel like it helps push me and makes me feel proud about myself.”

Leaders within the Vietnamese-Australian sporting community have echoed this sentiment. Quang Huynh, who works with the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation, described Jayden as “great for the community … hopefully this opens up the opportunity for more Vietnamese boys and girls to play.”

His debut comes at a time when the AFL is working to increase cultural diversity and inclusion across the game. Jayden’s achievement is a powerful symbol of how sport can bridge cultures, strengthen communities, and inspire the next generation.

For the Vietnamese-Australian community, Jayden’s debut is more than a sporting highlight — it is a moment of pride and representation on a national stage.

The Australia Vietnam Friendship Society celebrates Jayden’s incredible achievement and looks forward to following his journey in the AFL.

Congratulations, Jayden — you’ve made history!
